Why Are People Moving to the Suburbs
Population shifts and migration are a sure sign of change in circumstances. Studies and satellite images show that more people around the world are shifting their preferences from urban areas of high population density to suburban and sometimes even rural areas of low population density. So why exactly are so many people moving into these places of less population density? One of the attractions is the health benefits received living in suburban or rural areas when compared to urban areas. One will also find the price of land forsale is lower in rural or suburban areas when compared to urban areas.
Having a good diet and being active do play a crucial role in being healthy. However, we never really take into account the negative aspects of stress, poor air quality, noise and light pollution and other negative externalities we face while being in overcrowded and noisy cities that never really sleep. Compared to cities, the suburbs are less populated and a whole lot quieter. This means that people living in suburban and rural areas receive less stress and eye strain caused by glare and bright lights. Too much light is known to mess with our hormones and can have a lasting impact on our eyes. Noise pollution is said to be worse as it can result in hearing impairment overtime, disturbances in sleep patterns and those are just two of the direct effects on our health. Apart from those, elevated noise levels can create stress, increase workplace accidents rates, and stimulate aggression and other anti-social behaviors. Living in rural areas provides an escape from these. Poor air quality greatly increases the risk of asthma and other respiratory problems. It can also cause the short-term eye, nose and throat irritation as well as headaches, dizziness and fatigue. So maybe the commute to work is longer due to the distance between the place of work and suburbs. But is extra time spent on commute a big price to pay for our physical and mental health and well being?
1. Compared to the cost of living in a city, the cost of living in a suburb or rural area is much less. For those who find apartments stifling and claustrophobic, for those who prefer houses over apartments, the land for sale outside the cities is a lot less expensive than the land in the cities likes Hyderabad, Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai etc. More land can be used to build larger house and structures or more space can be allotted to gardening. Children and adults have access to more and often larger grounds for the purpose of play or athletic activities. This land may be available in the urban areas but they are often more crowded and scarce due to the price of land and the population density. Moving into the suburbs for more space definitely makes sense.
2. The suburbs are clearly better than urban areas. Sometimes people say that they feel disconnected from the outside world when they live in less densely populated areas but is that even possible? With the internet, social networking and media, it is hard to be disconnected. Commute becomes harder and trips that could be made at ad hoc times need to be planned. However. With easier commute we are giving up a potentially healthier life and more space to do what we want. In my opinion, moving to the suburbs is a pretty good choice.
